Around seven hundred kilometers east of Madagascar is a tropical island the size of Saarland: Île de la Réunion. An island that is a UNESCO natural heritage site and, as a French overseas department, is part of the EU. On the small area there is a huge, partly heavily eroded old volcano with two remaining peaks, each 3000 meters high. The still active volcano in the east - Piton de la Fournaise - is 2600 meters high and is one of the most active mountains of fire in the world.
In this worldwide unique relief in the middle of a tropical ocean, over 100 microclimates have formed and so it offers an extremely diverse flora.
